Text Box: After 30 years of civil war, a referendum in Eritrea in April 1993 established Eritrea as an independent country. The national currency - the Nakfa - was introduced in 1998 and has been named after the town of Nacfa, the town in the Sahel mountains that served as the headquarters of the EPLF during Eritrea's armed struggle against Ethiopian occupation. The Nakfa was introduced at par with Ethiopian birr. At the same time new birr (ETB) notes were introduced in Ethiopia.
